Which is the Bad Guy?
As the US's Unlawful Internet Gambling Act is taking over the news with stories of finance and the world wide web, many wonder what the true difference between online gaming and online commerce is.
Now, let us take two persons sitting in their agencies both risking their money online, one is breaking the law, at the same time the other one is not. One of them is a day merchant, and with no respect to how you look at it, this person is venturing his money for the possibility to profit from the trade. I suppose that both these men are using the Internet for one and the same motive. Nevertheless, the latter is at the moment participating in an illegal business. Why illegitimate? Those average men are not professionally trained stock dealers, and they do not have any legal permission - in spite of all this they have no official barriers to carry on their illegal business.
Actually, the one single actual differing feature between online commerce and online gaming is the amount of money the US Government receives from the businesses: Day trading = large revenues; Gambling Online = no money and lots of casino bonus for gamblers. It is said that the US Congress passed the anti-online gambling ban for the exact reason that people are not profiting from millions of dollars spent every day.
